Kent County Jail Roster

The Kent County Jail Register, Michigan, is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county correctional facility. On the KentCourt.us website, you can quickly find publicly available information about current and recent inmates. Official information is also posted by the Kent County Sheriff's Office through its online viewer. Additionally, data can be obtained by phone or in person at the correctional facility's reception. The register search allows citizens to check custody status, booking date, and charges. The register is maintained by the corrections division of the Kent County Sheriff's Office; data is regularly updated and posted on a separate web portal.

Search Current Inmates in Kent Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is in custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility.

Online Search

  1. Go to the Booking Search Query page of the official Web Jail Viewer.
  2. Enter the full last name — this is a required field.
  3. Optionally, add the full first name or booking date to narrow the results.
  4. Click the search button. The system will display a list of individuals matching the criteria.

You will need the full legal last name for the search. If the booking number is known, it will speed up the process. Public information about court cases related to the arrest is also available on KentCourt.us.

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public register — their records are protected by Michigan state law.

By Phone

Call the correctional facility directly. The operator can confirm if a specific person is being held if you provide the full name.

In-Person Visit

You can visit the correctional facility's reception during business hours. Bring identification with you.

Additional inmate resources — visitation, correspondence — are collected on the Inmate Resources page of the sheriff's office.

Find Kent Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person undergoes the processing procedure at the correctional facility. This is the first official document that records the fact of being in custody.

During booking, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of custody
  • Charges
  • Arresting agency
  • Basic identification data of the detained person

An arrest itself does not mean that a person has been found guilty — it is merely a fact of detention. This is emphasized on the Inmate Lookup page on the county's website.

Access to booking records can be obtained in several ways:

  1. Web Jail Viewer — the online viewer shows information about individuals processed at the correctional facility. The displayed data is confidential in the part protected by Michigan state law, so the amount of publicly available fields is limited.
  2. Information Services & Records Division — the Information Services & Records Division of the sheriff's office manages all criminal records. To obtain more detailed information than is available online, a written request may be required.
  3. FOIA Request — if archival records or additional details are needed, a request can be submitted under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.

For state-level criminal history checks, there is the ICHAT system, supported by the Michigan State Police.

Search the Kent Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The official viewer supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the full last name in the appropriate field. The system requires the full last name — partial matches are not guaranteed. If you are unsure of the spelling, try the most likely option, and then an alternative (e.g., with or without a hyphen). Adding a first name is optional but significantly narrows the list for common last names.

Search by Booking Number

If the booking number is known, it provides the most accurate result — immediately displaying the specific record without unnecessary matches.

What to Do If the Search Yields No Results

  • Check the spelling of the last name — one letter can change the result.
  • The person may have already been released; the register only displays those currently in custody.
  • There may be a delay between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the system.
  • Call the correctional facility at (616) 632-6100 to clarify the status.
  • If the person has been transferred to a state facility, use the OTIS system of the Michigan Department of Corrections.

To search for related court cases in the 17th Circuit Court or 63rd District Court, use the MiCOURT Case Search portal.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Kent

The Web Jail Viewer register is updated regularly to reflect the current composition of inmates at the Kent County Correctional Facility. However, there is usually a delay between the actual booking and the appearance of the record in the online system — from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the facility's workload.

Limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay after arrest. A person may already be in custody, but their name has not yet appeared in the viewer. If the situation is urgent — call directly.
  • Disappearance of records after release. The register only shows those currently held. After release, transfer, or posting bail, the record is generally removed from public view.
  • Not an archive. The Web Jail Viewer does not replace a full criminal records database. For historical data, contact the records division of the sheriff's office or submit a FOIA request.
  • Confidentiality. Some information is protected by Michigan state law and is not subject to public disclosure.

Mistakes happen. The sheriff's office asks to report inaccuracies through the Inmate Lookup page. If you are looking for information about a convict serving a sentence in a state prison, not a county facility, go to OTIS — the Michigan Department of Corrections search system, which covers state facilities, not county ones.
